Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

On death

Death does not worry me—it is just another moment.
Being dead is what offends me. Although that, too,
might be as interesting and as trivial as life if only
it were as brief, a transition rather than a destination,
a caesura rather than a cessation. I want two things
forever: to continue and to change.
