Barrier

The greatest barrier to freedom is people's desire for the illusion of security.

Tried my hand at banana cake today. Iced one with coffee glaze, and added a little chocolate syrup on the second. They are good.

To forgive

It is easier to forgive someone for devastating you than for inconveniencing someone you love.

Fortune I got in a cookie yesterday: All men should try to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why.

Restless (Oliver)

All my life
I have been restless—
I have felt there is something
more wonderful than gloss—
than wholeness—
than staying at home.
I have not been sure what it is.

My wings, so far into the heavens!

R.I.P. Janet Kagan

From Locus: SF writer Janet Kagan, born 1946, died Friday, 29 February 2008, of C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), at the age of 63. She was author of popular "Mama Jason" stories published in Asimov's and collected in Mirabile (1991), and of two novels, Star Trek tie Uhura's Song (1985), and Hellspark (1988). Her 1992 novelette "The Nutcracker Coup" won a Hugo Award in 1993.

Damn. In my online correspondence with her, Janet was one of the kindest, most generous people I've known. Her chat room at NaNoWriMo was a must visit every year. This is unwelcome news.
